A tubular key has a
hollow, cylindrical shaft that is shorter in
length but larger in diameter than a
conventional key. It is designed to open a
tubular pin tumbler lock. At the end of the
shaft and parallel to it are grooves of
different lengths. The pins in the lock slide to
the ends of the groove. A small tab on the
outside of the shaft prevents the pins from
pushing the key out. The hollow center guides
the key as it is turned. This type of key is
hard to duplicate. Not only is it less common,
but it can only be duplicated by a special type
of machine.
